I am totally confused. I followed your link for money and added another meaning "காசு" . If you look at the page, Money is the title and sub heading says "ஆங்கிலம்" with bulleted thamizh meanings. Shouldn't it say "தமிழ்", as in Money's "தமிழ்" meanings. Correct me if I am wrong. - Saru

form creation discussion

• I wonder whether we can implement an application where we can create a

form based submission process. For instance, just typing in the Tamil Word, Equivalent English word, Category, etc would automatically list the word in the proper place--user:Natkeeran

• After briefly reviewing the English Wiktionary, I think even they have very basic setup and little

additional thought has been invested. I might be wrong. An extended categorization is not needed for Wiktionary. Major categories are sufficient.

We should perhaps evolve various pieces of information that need to be or can be included for a word. A criteria could be adopted from a well reputed dictionary, and then extended to include other language cases.

You could just make that as pull down menu or opition. A possible form field may be as follows:

Required Fields: Tamil Word, Major Category

The following fields optional: English Equivalent, Tamil Equivalent (s), Hindi Equivalent, Sinhalese Equivalent, Sanskrit Equivalent, Etc.

Natkeeran, whatever code we might write it should exhibit only the fileds which have been entered and not display the fields that are not entered. if it displays the incomplete fileds too then wiktionary will have an incomplete look. Not all users can fill all the optional language fields u have mentioned. so my suggestion for the form design is as follows:

1. page heading (compulsory field) 2. Tamil meaning (compulsory field) 3. Tamil meaning 2, Tamil meaning 3..etc., (optional filed) 4. Ravi: I agree that the page should not display any place holders and such. That is a matter of programming. I am not sure how involved this application could be. Interfacing with the Wikitionary may be the difficult part, but you have implemented similar application in Tamil Wikipedia, although not to this scope. I am assuming the page heading would be the Tamil Word. I am not sure requiring Tamil meaning would such a good idea, as many people may just may want to submit the English equivalents. Yes, category can be optional but, recommeded! Perhaps, we can settle upon a set of macro categories as a start. Natkeeran.

I'm also thinking of Java. By the way, to bypass all problems of admin access etc, there is a very good model. It's called a Javascript bookmarklet. The whole app resides in the browser itself. Welcome, Rajesh. Thanks a lot for coming forward to help. In the above form, if we enter a word, for example, nation, then the above form does the function of opening a edit page of a new page titled nation. Then we have to manually enter wiktionary explanation for the word in that page.

Now , my requirement is that there should be many text input fields through which i should be able to enter the page title, the languages the word is present in, its corresponding meanings in Tamil. for example, see the page arm. I created that page manually entering meaning of that word in german and english. Now i want a form with needed text input fields which when i submit in one click should be able to create the exact page with all wiki mark ups. I don mind whether the form is inside wiki or desktop application so far as the job is done. But it would be better if running the application doesnt need administrator access in the computer..keeping in mind that many users might work from office. preloaded template pages for new articles are created which i hope will make the job of creating new entries for english words very easy. See the page Wiktionary:புதிய பக்கத்தை உருவாக்குதல். This page can be bookmarked and used while u visit wiktionary every time to create new word meanings. I sincerely request and solicit active contributions from all of you to kick start this project. Crossing 3000 entries before 2005 year end should be a possible target i hope. Currently we have around 250 entries here. இலக்கண உதவி தேவை

feed சொல்லுக்கான பக்கத்தின் வரலாறைப் பாருங்கள். நான் ஒரு குழப்பத்தில் உள்ளேன். முதலில் செய்வினை, செயப்பாட்டு வினை என்பன ஆங்கிலத்தின் Active voice, Passive Voice என்ற பாகுபாட்டிற்கோ அல்லது Transitive verb, Intransitive verb என்ற பாகுபாட்டிற்கோ இணையானவை அல்ல என்று இதைப் பார்த்து அறிந்தேன். இந்த நிலையில் ஆங்கிலத்திலிருந்து தமிழுக்கு மொழிபெயர்க்கும் பக்கத்தில் இப்பாகுபாடு தேவையா என்று தெரியவில்லை. அதை விட வெட்கத்திற்குறிய விடயம் தமிழ் இலக்கணப்படி நான் முன்னர் செய்த பாகுபாடு சரியா என்று எனக்குத் தெரியவில்லை. :-(

எவரிடமாவது நல்ல தமிழ் இலக்கணப் புத்தகம் இருப்பின் அல்லது தாமாகவே அறிந்திருந்தால் விளக்கவும். மேலும் "A progressive grammar of the Tamil language" (Author:A. H. Sundar, TaWiktionary registered maximum growth rate (153%) among all the wiktionaries according to the recent statistics. Its good news and hope we can sustain the momentum. Unlike wikipedias, they are not using the number of articles to rank the wiktionaries. Instead they see the number of internal links(hope just the blue links), page size etc..Therefore, apart from adding tamil meanings for english words we also need to add tamil meanings for tamil words because most of the red internal links are for tamil words only. but at the same time we have to have a far fetched and wholistic view of tamil wiktionary development. at the end it should not look like we were competing with other wiktionaries and just focussed on the numbers instead of quality.For more explanation how they rank, please see the statistics page. Here is the exclusive recent stats page for tamil wiktionary. Also we are not really over 1000 words. There needs to be some clean up done by either deleting or moving the english word pages starting with caps and by moving the word lists and appendices to proper name spaces. Ravi, you are right about the need for a comprehensive view about how to organize information about a word. We need a minimum or basic criteria of what kind of information to include about a word. Standard, and reputed dictionaries are certainly good guides, as well as English other Wikitionaries and dictionaries.

In contrast to a print dictionary, here we do NOT have the space limitation. Also, we must have a MULTILIGUAL prospective, as you have indicated many times previously.

What I suggest is that lets put together SAMPLE or MODEL word pages, so that we can understand or develop the criteria. The following dictionary has good approach.

I agree with the suggestions given by Mayooranathan and natkeeran and would like to say my preferences over the order in which they should be executed.

Unlike in Tamil wikipedia where we focus much on the quality and length of the content than the total number of articles, I would like Tamil wiktionary to focus (in the immediate future, may be for a year) more on quality in giving meaning for words and the total number of articles. Because there is a critical need for a basic multi lingual free user friendly dictionary in Tamil in the internet. So I would like to see a basic multi lingual free user friendly dictionary in Tamil in the near future and our ultimate goal shall be to create a comprehensive, advanced and content rich dictionary in the future.

I fear that if we focus too much on enriching the content of each page from the begining stage of wiktionary itself, then the progress will be very slow and it wont match the immediate necessity of tamil community. An average visitor's first motive to refer Tamil wiktionary will be just to know the word meaning. We should be resolved to fulfill this minimum requirement for as many advanced (or poetic or complex or technical) words in Tamil and simple, basic words in english and we should work to achieve this goal as soon as possible.

My vision for the english-Tamil dictionary in the next one year shall be as follows: I hope I have written this post in simple english and my immediate goal shall be to make a blue link for each word in this post which would give the simple and most important meanings of those words in Tamil so that an average school educated Tamilian will not be handicapped in understanding a simple english text.

Even after six months in germany, I didnt feel the pressure to learn german much because i could always depend on google translation or other online dictionaries for understanding german through english. Thus, while I could understand german easily, I didnt have the need to learn a new language. If we could come up with a good advanced multi lingual- Tamil dictionary in the future, such translation tools can also be developed for Tamil also using the meanings given in wiktionary to form a database for automatic translation. user:Sarutv has also mentioned about such applications in his user page. Thus any tamilian can survive in any non-tamil environment without the need to learn a new language or english. By understanding everything in english, we have lost the habit of thinking in Tamil. I envision a future for Tamil community wherein just knowing Tamil is enough to understand any language and gain knowledge in any field. The development of tamil Wiktionary and Tamil Wikipedia can be a big tool to realise this vision.

Summarising, I list my vision and priorities as follows. My contribution to wiktionary in the next one year will be guided by this personal preference. As always wiki policies are open and flexible and I dont instruct my priorities as the action plan for wiktionary. But I would be very happy to get as many users to share my vision and appreciate the logic in it and the necessity for it.

Priorities (for next one year):

• Increase the number of words in English-tamil, Tamil-Tamil dictionaries as much as possible. But one should be clear that this is not done in order to enter in a competition for interwiktionary ranking. A better interwiktionary ranking can only be a side effect while we work towards fulfilling the basic need for Tamil community

• Appendix word lists for English-Tamil, Tamil- english technical words by each field

• Transfering all technical glossary info from Tamil virtual University database to here.

• Focus to be given to basic, simple english words and complex, poetic, technical tamil words

opinions:

• Its enough to give the most important,simple and frequent meanings alone. This will encourage more users to contribute without hesitation. Adding etymology, pronunciation , word usages, examples, proverbs shall be left to wiktionarians who may have an interest in lingusitics. It is a welcome contribution to any page but not a mandatory contribution

• Just giving englsih translation in pages with tamil title shall not be encouraged as it should be kept in mind always that wiktionary is multilingual-Tamil dictionary and not a Tamil-English dictionary. Giving tamil explanation or meaning in any page shall be made mandatory or highly advised

• Giving multi lingual translations shall be done in pages with tamil title only. because pasting the same translation word list in pages of same meaning is waste of time. For example, it is enough just to compile the translation of word கண் in that page itself. The same need not be compiled in page eye or any similar word in any other language. This seems logical and would reduce the work load of contributors in updating the lists.

Priorities after a year:

I hope that by this time (Dec 2006), we can succeed in creating basic, simple english-tamil dictionary and advanced tamil words-tamil dictionary. Sorry for posting this in english. Its becoming very hard these days to spend as much time as i would like to spend in wiki projects. Its very heartening to see that all the active contributors from wikipedia have landed here. Following are few of my immediate thoughts, after reaeding the above posts.

• I am still very much confused about the format, and layout for the Tamil Wikitionary pages. I feel there must be some CONSISTANCY about it. That is why I suggested SAMPLE or MODEL pages. In developing the sample or model pages, the structure and design should anticipate the details that may be added later. Only by anticipating can we maintain a consistency. Thus, at least few pages should be developed to be comprehensive sample pages. I must stress that CONSISTANCY is desired property, eventhough, we can not expect that from all users. In short we should produce a basic sample page that can be used in creating word pages, which can be extended to a comprehensive word pages in the long term. If we are going to develop or use the form based input system, then we should also keep CONSISTANCY in mind there as well.

• For technical words, we should be able to list them in the right category just by including their category, just like any Wikipedia article.

• We should not consider ourselves with English-English-Tamil, only English-Tamil, as any user who wants English equivalents can easily go to English Wkitionary . Also, now, I understand why you want to encourage Tamil-Tamil-English.

• Other people are interested in developing a web based, stand alone dictionary as well based on XML interface and data base. I have encouraged them to join Wikitionary, I am yet to hear form them.

அகரமுதலியொன்று தொடர்பான அடிப்படைகளைப் பொறுத்தவரையில் ஆங்கிலத்துக்கும், தமிழுக்கும் பல வேறுபாடுகள் உண்டு. தமிழில் பெயர்ச் சொற்களுடன் வேற்றுமை உருபுகள் சேரும் போது ஒவ்வொன்றும் வேறுவேறான தனித்தனிச் சொற்களாகின்றன. எடுத்துக்காட்டாக மாடு என்ற சொல், மாட்டை, மாட்டால், மாட்டுக்கு, மாட்டின், மாட்டினது, மாட்டிடம், மாடே என உருமாறுகிறது. தமிழர் அல்லாத அல்லது தமிழ் அதிகம் அறியாதவர்களைப் பொறுத்தவரை மாடு என்னும் சொல்பற்றி மட்டும் விளக்குவது போதாது. இது போலவே வினைச் சொற்களும் காலம், பால் மற்றும் இடம் காட்டும்போது பல வெவ்வேறான சொற்களாக உருவாகின்றன.ஆங்கிலத்தில் இந்த நிலை கிடையாது. ஆனால் ஜெர்மன், பிரெஞ்சு போன்ற மொழிகளில் தமிழையொத்த சில வேறுபாடுகள் உள்ளது போல் தெரிகிறது. எனவே அத்தகைய மொழிகளின் விக்சனரிகளிலிருந்தும் மாதிரிப் பக்கங்களுக்கு idea க்களைப் பெற்றுக்கொள்ள முடியும். முன் எடுத்துக் காட்டியவற்றைவிட பேச்சுத் தமிழ், எழுத்துத் தமிழ் வேறுபாடும் தமிழை ஆங்கிலத்திலிருந்து வேறுபடுத்துகின்றது.

தமிழர்கள் ஆங்கிலம் அறிந்து கொள்ளப் பயன்படுவது மட்டுமன்றி, பிற மொழிகளைப் பேசுபவர்கள் தமிழை அறிந்துகொள்ளவும், தமிழர்கள் பழந்தமிழ் இலக்கியங்களை வாசித்துப் புரிந்து கொள்ளவும், பல்வேறு பிரதேசத் தமிழ் மொழி வழக்குகளைப் பற்றி ஏனைய தமிழர்கள் அறிந்து கொள்ளவும் தமிழ் விக்சனரி பயன்பட வேண்டும். மேற்படி பொதுவான தேவைகளுக்கு மட்டுமன்றி, ஆய்வுத் தேவைகளுக்கும் பயன்படத்தக்கதாகக் காலப்போக்கில் வளர்த்தெடுக்கப்பட வேண்டுமென்பதே எனது கருத்தும், விருப்பமுமாகும். மிகப் பழங்காலம் தொடக்கம் பல்வேறு கால கட்டங்களிலும் புழக்கத்திலிருந்த தமிழ்ச் சொற்களைத் தனித்தனியாகத் தொகுத்து வைத்தல் சொற்பிறப்பும் வளர்ச்சியும், பிறமொழிக் கலப்பு, கலைச் சொல்லாக்கம் போன்ற துறைகளில் ஆய்வுத் தேவைகளுக்குப் பயன்படக்கூடும். சங்க இலக்கியங்கள், திருக்குறள், சிலப்பதிகாரம், தேவாரங்கள், ஆரம்பகாலச் செய்திப் பத்திரிகைகள் போன்ற பல்வேறு காலகட்டங்களையும் சேர்ந்த தமிழ் இலக்கிய மற்றும் பிறவகை நூல்களிலுள்ள சொற்களைத் தனித்தனியாகத் தொகுத்தல் மூலம் இவ்வாறான ஒரு நோக்கத்துக்கு உதவ முடியும்.

ஆங்கில விக்சனரியில் en:birds, en:flowers என்ற பன்மைப் பெயர்த் தலைப்புகளுக்கு தனிப்பக்கங்களே வைத்திருக்கிறார்கள். dictionary.com தளத்தில் இப்பக்கங்களை ஒருமைப் பெயர்ப் பக்கங்களுக்கு வழிமாற்றுகிறார்கள். தமிழ் விக்சனரியில் என்ன நடைமுறையைப் பின்பற்றலாம் என்பதை தெரிவியுங்கள். தனிப்பக்கங்கள் வைப்பதில் எனக்கு உடன்பாடில்லை. பக்கங்களின் எண்ணிக்கை அளவுக்கு அதிகமாய் காட்டத் தான் இது பயன்படும். வழிமாற்றுப் பக்கங்கள் உருவாக்குவதும் வேலையை அதிகரிக்கச்செய்யும். எனினும், leaves என்பது leafன் பன்மை வடிவம் என்பது கூடத் தெரியாத தொடக்க நிலை பயனர்களுக்கு எவ்வாறு நம் தளத்தை பயன் மிகுந்ததாய் மாற்றலாம்?--ரவி 16:15, 29 ஆகஸ்ட் 2006 (UTC)

மாணிக்கம், சொற்கள் சேரும் வேகத்துக்கு, இனி ஆயிரம் ஆயிரமாக எண்ணாமல், இரு மடங்காக (1000, 2000, 4000, 8000..) எண்ணலாம் என்றிருந்தேன்..பரவாயில்லை.. சந்தோஷம் தான்..உமாசுதன் அடித்த சூறாவளியில் பழைய பங்களிப்பாளர்கள் காணாமல் போய்விட்டார்கள் ;) நிச்சயம், இந்த ஆண்டு இறுதிக்குள் 5000 சொல் இலக்கை அடையலாம். மார்ச் 2007ல் 10000 சொற்கள் என்று பேராசைத்தனமான இலக்கை வைத்துள்ளேன் :) பார்க்கலாம். இணையத்திலும் அச்சிலும் உள்ள பல தமிழ் அகரமுதலிகள் ஓரிரு வார்த்தைகளில் பொருள் தருவதுடன் நிறுத்திக்கொள்வது போல் இல்லாமல், நாம் அனைவரும் ஒவ்வொரு பக்கத்தையும் இயன்ற அளவு விரிவாக எடுத்துக்காட்டு வாசகங்களுடன் தர முயன்றால், தமிழ் விக்சனரி தனித்துவமும் சிறப்பும் கூடுதல் பயன்பாடும் மிக்கதாய் இருக்கும். எண்ணிக்கை, தரம் ஆகிய இரண்டிலும் தமிழ் விக்கிபீடியா சம கவனம் செலுத்துகிறது. அதே வழிகாட்டலை நாம் இங்கும் பின்பற்றலாம்--ரவி 09:38, 6 செப்டெம்பர் 2006 (UTC)
